Daz's Daily #27 - Smoke Effects

Good afternoon Gunslingers!
Today's Daily takes a look at smoke effects - an area I've only played about with in the past so this was a great learning experience for me as well!
I used the following paints from P3:

  • Thamar Black,

  • Morrow White,

  • Cygnus Yellow

  • Inferno Orange

  • Khador Red

  • Sanguine Base

From Vallejo -

  • Fluro Yellow

  • Fluro Orange

Paint Comparison: Fluro Yellow, Primary Red, Primary Yellow, Rich Orange, Black, White, Burgundy and Fluro Orange

Base coat smoke area in white. This took three passes watered down 50/50 to avoid textures.

The first layer is a 50/50 mix of Fluro yellow and Cygnus Yellow watered down 50/50.

The next layer is Fluro Orange. I've made sure to leave some of the Yellow showing in the recesses as it would be hotter towards the inside of the plume.

A 50/50 mix of Fluro Orange and Khador Red Base was applied to bring out the smoke clouds. Once again our previous colour was left in the recesses.

Pure Khador Red Base was applied to the plumes and bulges leaving a little of the previous colour showing I. The recesses near the exhaust pipe but totally covering the rear part or the plume.

The bulges were glazes three times with Sanguine Base.

A 50/50 mix of Sanguine Base and Thamar Black was glazed over the bulges leaving a little of our previous colour showing.

Thamar Black was glazed over the bulges to add further depth.

Another glaze of Thamar Black was applied to add final definition to the plumes.

The area closest to the exhaust was highlighted with a 50/50 mix of Fluro Yellow and Morrow White. Then small dots of white were added to simulate embers.
