Daz's Daily #18 - Confederate Uniforms

It's time to kick off another Daz's Daily with a painting tutorial that takes a look at Confederate uniform colours.

What you’ll need:

  • P3 Paints - Bastion Grey

  • P3 Paints - Umbral Umber

  • P3 Paints - Menoth White Base

  • P3 Paints - Thamar Black

  • Artist Opus brushes (sizes 1 and 0)

Here's a colour comparison just in case you don't have access to P3. Bastion Grey is a warm brown/grey, Menoth White is a dark bone and Umbral Umber is a dark blue/brown.

Step 1 - basecoat the uniform areas with Bastion Grey. I applied this watered down 50/50 over a zenithal undercoat in one pass.

Step 2 - shadows are defined with a wash of 50/50 Umbral Umber and Thamar Black. This was watered down 75/25 and applied sparingly in two passes.

Step 3 - Bastion Grey is reapplied to the trousers leaving the previous wash showing in the recesses. I watered down the Bastion Grey 50/50 to allow for a little translucency to aid blending.

Step 4 - a glaze of our previous wash was applied over the entire area to aid blending. The wash was watered down a further 50/50 to create the glaze. Once again this was applied sparingly and not allowed to pool.

Step 5 - I made a mix of 50/50 Menoth White Base and Bastion Grey for the first highlight. This was watered down 50/50 and applied to the upper areas of the folds where they meet with the shadowed areas. This will help build contrast.

Step 6 - the next highlight is pure Menoth White Base and is applied carefully with the smallest brush. Aim your highlights to sit right next to the deepest shadow to accentuate contrast.

Step 7 - A final glaze of Bastion Grey was applied to the whole area to blend our layers. This was watered down around 10/1 and not allowed to pool..

And jobs a good'un!
