Step-by-Step: A Simple Sultanate Scheme

It’s that time once again on the Warcradle Studios blog, it's Step-by-Step time, and this time it’s the turn of one of the newer factions.

Fresh from demoing Dystopian Wars at UK Games Expo 2022, and with the release of lots of new ships for the Sultanate, Daz has been inspired to build and paint a fleet of his own! You may have seen on our socials that we shared pictures of his progress and by popular demand he has shared a Step-by-Step of how he did it.

Follow along and find out how in just 8 easy steps you can achieve an elegant base coat for your Sultanate just like Daz achieved on this Morea Class Cruiser from the Suleiman Battlefleet Set . All paints used are P3 unless stated otherwise.

Step 1: To begin, the model was primed with GW Chaos Black Spray. Then I applied a zenithal base coat of Underbelly Blue. I repeated this process three times to get a strong solid coat.

Step 2: Using a torn up piece of sponge I stippled on some Umbral Umber to simulate some heavy scoring and damage. Once dry, I gave the whole model a coat of Vallejo Gloss Varnish using an Airbrush.

Step 3: Next, I watered down Bloodstone to around 5-1 and stippled on some blobs of the mix in a random fashion. These were applied quite heavily as they need to be wet for the next stage.

Step 4 : Using a clean damp brush I spread the Bloodstone blobs across the entire model, guiding it into recesses and around rivets to create a sense of old rust.

Step 5: A thin glaze of Turquoise Ink watered down around 7-1 was then applied across the entire model to reset the blue green base coat.

Step 6: Making a 3-1 mix of Rhulic Gold and Umbral Umber, I base coated the gold areas.

Step 7: All of the decking was then base coated with Umbral Umber.

Step 8: Any red areas were given a 2-1 mix of Skorne Red and Sanguine base. The silver areas were given a base coat of Cold Steel.

And that is the base coating complete! From here you can add more detail and shading or leave it as it is. This colour scheme is perfect for replicating on every ship from the Suleiman Battlefleet Set as Daz plans to do.
