With the Scandinavian’s re-emerging to the seas of the Dystopian Wars, it’s time once again for another Step-by-Step.
Here to inspire your new Imperium additions, Daz has been recently painting his Scandinavian ships with a modern paint scheme and has shared with us how he managed to accomplish it.
Keep reading to see how Daz got his Ragnarok Class Heavy Reaver looking positively stunning. All paints mentioned are P3 unless stated otherwise.
Step 1: I started by priming the miniature with GW Chaos Black spray and then applying a base coat of Battledress Green using an airbrush. I applied this several times to get a solid covering.
Step 2: Next, I made a 50:50 mix of Battledress Green and Underbelly Blue to highlight all the major elements and add definition to the armour plates. Again, I used an airbrush to speed up the blending process. Once this was complete I gave the model a coat of Vallejo Gloss Varnish ready for the next stage.
Step 3: Watering down some Bloodstone to around 6:1 and adding a spot of Vallejo Matte Medium I created a nice rusty looking wash. I applied this quite heavily but quickly removed any excess with a damp brush to avoid dry lines. You can also repeat this process to add depth or more streaking.
Step 4: At this stage I applied all the necessary base coats using the following mixes:
Steel - Pig Iron
Bronze - 50:50 mix of Molten Bronze and Umbral Umber
Camo - Asheth Grey
Gold - 50:50 mix of Molten Bronze and Rhulic Gold
Step 5: To add some weathering I sponged on some Umbral Umber. I also used an old spiky brush to add rough scratches with the same colour.
Step 6: Next up, I shaded the steel areas with a wash of Thamar Black.
Step 7: Creating a 60:40 wash of Brown and Blue Ink (watered down to around 50:50) I shaded the bronze and gold areas.
Step 8: Following this, I highlighted the golden areas with a 75:25 mix of Rhulic Gold and Heartfire.
Step 9: Then I highlighted the steel areas with Cold Steel.
Step 10: The pipe junctions were painted Thamar Black, tidying up the gold in the process.
Step 11: The first edge highlight was applied to the pipe junctions with a mix of 50:50 Thamar Black and Underbelly Blue.
Step 12: For the next highlight I added 50% more Underbelly Blue to the previous mix and applied it on the pipe junctions
Step 13: I used a glaze of 50:50 Thamar Black and Blue Ink watered down around 10:1 to blend the previous highlights and to add a little more depth to the metallic areas.
Step 14: Using Battledress Green, I tidied up and added further weathering to break up the straight edges of the camo. Once again I used a mixture of sponge and old spike brush to achieve this effect.
Step 15 (My favourite bit!): I edge highlighted the entire model with Thrall Flesh. This stage is worth taking your time and is great at developing brush control. I also picked out rivets and the undersides of any big chips or damage with the same mix.
Step 16: For the windows. I base coated them with a heavy wash of Gnarls Green.
Step 17: I sketched in some rough reflections on the windows with a 50:50 mix of Arcane Blue and Gnarls Green.
Step 18: Adding more Arcane Blue to the previous mix and I used it to add a little more definition to the reflections.
Step 19: Underbelly Blue was added to the previous mix to sharpen the reflections.
Step 20: To tie it all together, a very thin glaze of Thamar Black and Blue Ink was used to blend the highlights on the glass.
And that’s how I achieved my Scandinavian scheme!
There you have it, Daz never fails to amaze time and time again! Will you be giving this a go on your Ragnarok Battlefleet Set? Let us know how you plan to paint the new Scandinavian ships.
