Assault Machine Carapace

Step 1 - To start this project, I primed the Ketos/Lotan carapace with a Citadel Chaos Black undercoat.

Step 2 - Next, I base-coated the carapace with Bloodstone, applying it in three layers. Each layer should shrink towards the centre of the plate to give a nice basic gradient. You can achieve this through wet blending or controlled dry brushing if you don't have an airbrush.

Step 3 - Using an airbrush, the first highlight I applied was Bogrin Brown.

Step 4 - Next, I applied a second highlight using Rucksack Tan.

Step 5 - The final highlight was applied to the central part of the carapace using Moldy Ochre.

Step 6 - After the highlights, a wash of Turquoise Ink was used to add depth and visual interest to the recessed areas and panel lines.

Step 7 - From here, I edge-highlighted the entire panel with Rucksack Tan, making sure to also pick out any details like rivets.

Step 8 - All edges facing upwards (the direction of our imaginary light source) were highlighted with Moldy Ochre.

Step 9 - To accentuate the previous highlights, the highest edges of the model were highlighted with Menoth White Highlight.

Step 10 - I created a thinned-down glaze of Caspian Flesh Wash (7:1 paint to water) and applied this to the whole model to bring everything together.

Step 11 - Any white panels (such as the central vertical panel) were picked out with a 1:1 mix of Ironhull Grey and Underbelly Blue

Step 12 - I added some Menoth White Highlight to this mix and applied it in a very loose, sketchy style to add texture.

Step 13 - Finally, one last highlight was applied with pure Menoth White Highlight, again using the sketching style to add depth.

And just like that, you’ve got one perfect panel for your Lotan or Ketos Assault Machines!
